โNothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.โ
Ralph Waldo Emerson, essayist and poet, “Circles” (1841)
A longer version, usually credited to Emerson, adds that “enthusiasm is the mother of effort”. Samuel Taylor Coleridge made the other half of the point: “nothing is so contagious as enthusiasm”. Put the two together and you have most of what I believe about success, in business and in a career.
I have a theory that almost anyone can be successful in whatever career they choose, and it starts with two habits.
Answer the phone. Don’t be afraid to talk, even when it is a difficult call or you don’t know who is calling. If it is someone you would rather avoid, that is the call to pick up. Sort it out. Problems that are dealt with on the phone today are almost always smaller than the ones that arrive by email next month.
Bring the energy. Enthusiasm is where effort comes from, and it spreads. If you are not bringing the energy, the people around you won’t either, and no amount of planning will make up for it.
Why this belongs in a quality system
None of this sounds like ISO, but it is closer than it looks. ISO 9001:2026 now asks top management to promote a quality culture and ethical behaviour as part of leadership (clause 5.1). You cannot write a procedure for enthusiasm, and you cannot audit culture by reading a policy. What you can see is behaviour: who picks up the phone when a customer is unhappy, how fast a complaint gets a real answer, whether problems are raised early or hidden until the audit.
That is why values statements so often fall flat. A list of words on the wall, such as customer focus, integrity, accountability or quality, means nothing until someone can point to what it looks like on a Tuesday afternoon. “Customer focus” is answering the difficult call. “Accountability” is owning the nonconformity rather than explaining it away. “Quality” is Philip Crosby’s “do it right the first time”, and when that fails, fixing the cause rather than the symptom.
If you want to know whether your quality culture is real, don’t ask what your values are. Ask who answered the last angry customer, how quickly, and what changed afterwards.
