Government Grants & Funding for ISO Certification in Australia: How to Find Them

Government funding can help offset the cost of ISO certification, but the specific programs come and go, so any article listing “current grants” is out of date within months. I have lost count of the number of clients who come to me clutching the name of a grant that closed two years ago. The reliable, evergreen way to find funding you’re actually eligible for is the Australian Government’s free Grants and Programs Finder on business.gov.au. This guide shows you how to use it to find funding relevant to ISO certification.

Business owner reviewing a grant application
The free business.gov.au Grants and Programs Finder takes about five minutes and searches funding across federal, state and territory governments.

First, set your expectations

There is rarely a grant called an “ISO 9001 grant” or “ISO 27001 grant.” Instead, ISO certification is usually funded indirectly, through broader programs aimed at:

  • Business capability and improvement: where a management system upgrade qualifies as eligible expenditure.
  • Cyber security and digital uplift: directly relevant to ISO 27001, the Essential Eight and ISO 42001 AI management.
  • Export readiness and market access: where certification is often a prerequisite to win overseas or government contracts.
  • Industry-specific modernisation: such as manufacturing or agriculture programs.

So the trick is to search broadly and look for programs whose eligible costs could include consulting and certification, rather than searching for “ISO” alone.

How to use the business.gov.au Grants and Programs Finder

The Grants and Programs Finder is a free, guided search that takes about five minutes. It pulls together grants, funding and support programs from across federal, state and territory governments. You answer a short series of questions and it returns the opportunities you may be eligible for. Here’s what it asks, and how to answer it with ISO certification in mind.

  • Where your business operates: choose your state or territory (you can pick more than one), and tick “regional or rural” if that applies, as some programs are location-specific.
  • Your industry: select from the list (manufacturing, construction, professional services, agriculture, and so on). Industry-specific programs are often the most generous.
  • Your business structure: company, sole trader, partnership, trust or not-for-profit.
  • What you’re interested in: for certification, select Funding and Subsidies and rebates (and Advice and mentoring if you’d value guidance too).
  • What you need help with: this is the key filter. For information security and AI standards, choose Online and digital and Artificial intelligence (AI). For quality, safety or environmental certification, try Operational costs, Training and learning new skills, Conduct research and development, Importing or exporting and Selling to government.
  • How long you’ve been operating: under 2 years, 2-5 years, or more than 5 years.
  • Program status: select Open (and Coming soon) so you only see opportunities you can act on.
  • Indigenous business options: if relevant, you can choose to show only Indigenous business opportunities.

Then select View results. You can refine further with the on-page filters, shortlist any program by clicking its star icon, and email yourself the shortlist so you can review and apply later.

Search tips for ISO certification funding

  • Run the search more than once. Try a tight search first, then broaden the objectives. Different combinations surface different programs.
  • For ISO 27001, Essential Eight and ISO 42001, the cyber-security and digital/AI objectives are your best bet. Government is actively funding cyber uplift for small business.
  • For ISO 9001, 45001 and 14001, look under business capability, manufacturing modernisation and export-readiness programs, where certification is often an eligible cost or a prerequisite.
  • Check your state or territory too. The finder includes many state programs, but it’s worth also visiting your state government’s own business grants page, as some local programs are listed there first.
  • Read the eligibility and dates carefully. Note open and close dates, eligible expenditure, co-contribution requirements, and whether you need quotes before applying.

Other funding worth knowing about

Beyond grants, the R&D Tax Incentive can support genuine research and development activity, and many state and territory governments run their own small-business capability, cyber and export programs. Industry associations and your local business chamber are also worth a look. The common thread: ISO certification rarely has its own funding line, but it frequently qualifies as eligible spend within a broader program.

Found funding? Here’s how Streamline helps

Most grant applications need a clear scope and a quote for the work. In my experience the applications that get across the line are the ones where the scope is specific (a named standard, a defined site, a realistic timeline), not a vague “improve our systems.” We can provide a fixed-fee proposal for your ISO project to support your application, and once you’re funded we design, implement, audit or mentor your system to certification, first time. Whether it’s ISO 9001, ISO 27001, the Essential Eight or another standard, we’ll help you make the most of the funding.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a specific grant for ISO 9001 certification?

Rarely. ISO certification is usually funded within broader business-improvement, cyber, digital or export programs rather than a dedicated “ISO grant.” Use the business.gov.au finder to see what’s currently open for your business.

Does the government pay for ISO certification?

Sometimes partially. Many programs co-fund a percentage of eligible costs (which can include consulting and certification) rather than the full amount, and most require you to contribute as well. Always check the specific program’s rules.
