Free AI Training for Small Business, and What It Means for Clause 7.2

Tilt-shift miniature of a small office training room, with a colleague at a whiteboard and staff following along on laptops
Clause 7.2 requires you to determine the competence your people need and to keep evidence of it. Vendor-run AI training is now free, which removes cost as the reason not to.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic have now launched free AI training programs aimed squarely at small business, and if your people use AI on work that affects your management system, that training is not just useful. It is evidence you are required to hold. ISO clause 7.2 asks you to determine the competence your people need, make sure they have it, act to close the gap, and keep records proving it. Free vendor training closes part of that gap at no cost.

There is a catch for Australian businesses, and it is worth knowing before you get excited: the online courses are open to anyone, but the in-person events from both vendors are currently United States only.

What OpenAI launched

OpenAI announced its ChatGPT for small business program on 21 July 2026. It is built around ChatGPT Work, its agent for multi-step tasks, and includes:

  • Hands-on virtual training. Product-specific webinars with small business demos, prompts to try, and automations across accounting, marketing, ecommerce and more, plus partner webinars and Q&A sessions.
  • In-person AI academies. Guided instruction and hands-on exercises with the OpenAI Academy team, held across the US.
  • Guides and customer stories, including interactive guides you can upload straight into ChatGPT Work, and short-form video.
  • Partner skills and offers from Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian and Wix, built around common small business workflows.

OpenAI cites results from its earlier Small Business AI Jams, where it says 78% of participants built a functional AI workflow in a single day and 42% saved more than five hours a week. Treat vendor-reported figures as vendor-reported, but the direction is clear enough.

What Anthropic launched

Anthropic got there first, launching Claude for Small Business on 13 May 2026. The training component is AI Fluency for Small Business, a free on-demand online course run in partnership with PayPal and taught by owners who have built AI into their own operations rather than by vendors. It covers which tasks in a business are actually suited to AI, and how to use it safely, responsibly and ethically.

Anthropic also runs the Claude SMB Tour, a free half-day live training and hands-on workshop for around 100 local business leaders per stop, with attendees receiving a one-month Claude Max subscription. Spring stops were Chicago, Tulsa, Dallas, Hamilton Township, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Salt Lake City, Baltimore, San Jose and Indianapolis. All United States.

One finding from Anthropic’s own research is worth pausing on: in a survey of small business owners, half named data security as their single biggest hesitation about AI. That is a competence and governance problem as much as a technical one, and it is exactly what a management system is for.

Both vendors are pushing training as hard as product. The online material is the part Australian businesses can actually use today.

Why this matters for clause 7.2

Clause 7.2 appears in every Annex SL standard, including ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001. It requires you to:

  1. Determine the necessary competence of people doing work under your control that affects the performance of the management system.
  2. Ensure they are competent on the basis of appropriate education, training or experience.
  3. Take action to acquire competence where there is a gap, and evaluate the effectiveness of that action.
  4. Retain documented information as evidence of competence.

Here is where most organisations trip. If your bookkeeper is now using an AI agent to reconcile the month, or your estimator is drafting quotes with it, that work affects your management system. The competence required has changed, and in most systems nobody has gone back and updated the competence requirements to reflect it.

Free vendor training is a cheap, fast way to close step 3. The completion record gives you something for step 4.

A certificate is not competence

The word most people skip in clause 7.2 is evaluate. The standard does not just ask you to provide training. It asks you to evaluate whether the action taken actually worked.

A course completion certificate proves attendance. It does not prove the person can now use the tool safely on your work, spot when the output is wrong, or recognise the tasks they should not hand over at all. That gap between “has done the training” and “is actually competent” is the single most common finding we raise against 7.2, and AI makes it wider, because the tools are confident and fluent even when they are wrong. We wrote about that problem in more depth in our piece on Dunning-Kruger and clause 7.2.

Practical ways to evaluate effectiveness, none of which take long:

  • Have the person walk you through a real task they completed with AI, and explain how they checked it.
  • Sample their AI-assisted output the way you would sample any other work.
  • Ask what they would not use it for, and why. A good answer here tells you more than any certificate.
  • Track whether error and rework rates moved after the training.

What to do this week

  1. List who is already using AI on work that touches your management system. In most businesses this is more people than management thinks.
  2. Update the competence requirements for those roles to include AI use, including what is out of bounds.
  3. Put them through the free training. The Anthropic and OpenAI online material costs nothing and is genuinely aimed at small business rather than developers.
  4. Keep the completion records with your other competence evidence.
  5. Evaluate effectiveness using one of the methods above, and record what you found. This is the step that turns a certificate into evidence.
  6. Check your AI use is governed, not just skilled. Training people to use a tool well is not the same as controlling what data goes into it.

On that last point, if AI is becoming material to how you operate, ISO 42001 is the standard that addresses AI governance directly. Our guide to which AI tools are ISO 42001 certified, and how to stop them training on your data is the practical companion to this one.

Free AI training and ISO competence: FAQs

Is the AI training free?

The online components from both vendors are free. Anthropic’s AI Fluency for Small Business course is free and on-demand. OpenAI’s virtual webinars, guides and videos are free. The in-person events are also free but currently run only in the United States.

Can Australian businesses access it?

The online courses and webinars, yes. The in-person AI academies and the Claude SMB Tour are US-based, so the practical option from Australia is the on-demand and virtual material.

Does completing a vendor course satisfy clause 7.2?

Partly. It supports the training element and gives you documented information. It does not by itself demonstrate competence, because clause 7.2 also requires you to evaluate whether the action taken was effective. You need some evidence the person can apply it to your work.

Do we need ISO 42001 just because staff use ChatGPT or Claude?

No. Casual use of a general AI assistant does not oblige anyone to certify to ISO 42001. It becomes worth considering when AI is material to your products, services or decisions, or when customers and regulators start asking how you govern it.

What evidence should we keep?

The updated competence requirements for the role, the training completion record, and a short note of how you evaluated effectiveness and what you concluded. Three items, and the third is the one most systems are missing.
