The short answer
ISO 42001 certification costs $9,000 to $27,000 in Streamline fees if you already hold ISO 27001, and $18,000 to $55,000 if you are starting without a certified management system, over a project of three to six months. The figure is driven by how deeply AI sits in your business, not by headcount. Certification body audit fees are charged separately.

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Australia, and how long does it take? ISO 42001 is the world’s first AI management system standard, so pricing is newer and varies more than long-established standards. For most Australian small to medium businesses, expect Streamline fees of roughly $9,000 to $55,000 and a timeline of three to six months. The single biggest factor is how deeply AI sits in what you do, which moves the figure by two to three times. Holding ISO 27001 already roughly halves it. This guide breaks down where the money goes, worked examples by starting point, the ongoing annual costs, whether grants can help, and how to keep the whole thing lean.

If you run several standards together, an integrated management system is usually cheaper to run than certifying each one separately.

What you are paying for
ISO 42001 certification cost splits into two things people often lump together: the cost of building the AI management system (your work, or a consultant’s/mentor’s), and the cost of the certification audit itself, done by an independent certification body. You can’t pay the auditor to build your system, and a consultant can’t certify you. Keeping those two separate is the first step to a realistic budget. What makes ISO 42001 different from older standards is that the governance work is genuinely new: you’re documenting how you assess, deploy and monitor AI, which many businesses have never formalised before.
What drives the cost of ISO 42001?
- Your AI footprint: how many AI systems you build, buy or deploy, and how high-risk they are, decides how much governance you need.
- Existing ISO 27001 (or 9001): if you already run a management system, you have most of the framework and are adding AI-specific controls rather than starting over.
- Scope of the AIMS: a tight, clearly defined scope keeps the assessment and controls lean.
- Size and complexity: more people, locations and AI use cases means more to assess.
- The certification body: Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit fees vary between bodies and are driven by your size and scope.
- How much you do yourself: building it in-house with mentoring costs less than full consultancy.
ISO 42001 cost breakdown (Australia, 2026)
- Gap analysis and scoping: available on its own if you want the size of the job before committing to the build
- AIMS implementation support: the bulk of the fee, and significantly less if you already hold ISO 27001 or build it yourself with mentoring
- Stage 1 and Stage 2 certification audit: charged by your certification body and based on size and scope
- Annual surveillance audits: a smaller recurring cost in years two and three
- Internal time: the hours your team spends defining AI policy, assessing impacts and embedding controls
What moves the number is where AI sits in your business. Using AI tools internally is a different job from running AI in front of your customers, and both are different again from training or hosting your own models. The ranges below are Streamline fees and exclude the certification body audit.
| Where AI sits in your business | No existing certified system | Existing ISO 27001 |
|---|---|---|
| Internal productivity only. Copilot, meeting notes, drafting. AI helps staff work and does not reach customers. | around $18,000 | around $9,000 |
| Embedded in service delivery. AI handles or shapes customer interactions and runs on customer data, usually across a vendor stack you configure rather than build. | $35,000 to $55,000 | $18,000 to $27,000 |
| Developing or self-hosting models. Training or fine-tuning your own models, local or privately hosted inference, chained or agentic systems, or AI making consequential decisions without a human in the loop. | from $55,000 | from around $27,500 |
Drafting your AI management system with AI tools?
It’s a natural fit, but an AI-drafted ISO 42001 system still has to conform and prove it works. With mentoring we guide your team through the build and provide an independent internal audit (clause 9.2) where your team lacks the capacity or the impartiality to run it internally, so you certify first time without paying for full consultancy.

Ranges are useful, but most people want to know where they sit. With ISO 42001, your existing certifications move the number more than headcount does:
| Business profile | Indicative Streamline fee | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Internal AI tools only, already ISO 27001 certified | around $9,000 | about 3 months |
| Internal AI tools only, starting without a certified system | around $18,000 | 3 to 4 months |
| AI embedded in service delivery, already ISO 27001 certified | $18,000 to $27,000 | 3 to 4 months |
| AI embedded in service delivery, starting without a certified system | $35,000 to $55,000 | 4 to 6 months |
| Developing or self-hosting models, or complex configurations | from $55,000, or from around $27,500 on an ISO 27001 base | six months or more |
Why your starting point matters most
ISO 42001 shares its structure with ISO 27001. If you’re already certified to ISO 27001, you’ve got most of the management system in place (context, leadership, risk management, internal audit and management review) and you’re adding AI-specific governance on top, not building from scratch. In practice this can halve the cost.
The saving comes from not rebuilding what you already have. Context, leadership, risk management, internal audit and management review are common to both standards, so the ISO 42001 project becomes AI-specific governance rather than management system foundations. That’s why any honest quote starts with a look at what you already have. Read more on how the two standards work together in our guide to ISO 42001 and ISO 27001.
A gap analysis is the quickest way to find out where you sit and turn “it depends” into a costed plan.
Do you need to buy the standard?
No. Buying the standard is not a requirement of certification and no certification body will ask whether you own a copy. It is still worth budgeting for, because without it you cannot check what a clause says. That matters in two places: settling what the standard requires when somebody tells you it requires something, and identifying which clauses call for documented information, which is what an auditor will ask you to produce.
AS ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is $260.82 including GST from the Standards Australia store. Read the licence terms before you buy: it is a one-time purchase of a single licence for one person, not shareable, read in a browser or through a restricted PDF that opens on one device only, and future editions are not included. If several people need access, that is several licences. It is the dearest of the management system standards to buy, and the one where people are least likely to already know the clause structure.
Will it be free soon? Standards Australia opened registrations on 25 August 2026 for government-sponsored, read-only access to selected Australian Standards that are referenced in Commonwealth, state and territory legislation, covering areas such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, workplace health and safety and product safety. ISO management system standards are voluntary rather than called up by legislation, so they sit outside the scheme’s stated scope, and no launch date has been confirmed. Budget for buying this one.
Against a first-year figure in the thousands it is a rounding error, and it removes a surprising amount of argument.
The ongoing cost after year one
Like every ISO management system, ISO 42001 is not a one-off purchase: the certificate lasts three years but only while you keep the system running and pass the annual checks. Budget for:
- Annual surveillance audits: a smaller recurring fee in years two and three.
- Your own internal audit and management review: required every year (clause 9.2), either your team’s time or an independent internal audit.
- Recertification every three years: a fuller audit at the end of the cycle.
- Keeping AI governance current: as you add or change AI systems, your impact assessments and controls need updating. AI moves fast, so this is more active than a typical management system.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take?
Three to six months for most organisations. With an established ISO 27001 system to build on it sits at the short end. Starting from nothing with several high-risk AI systems to govern, it runs longer. The work runs in stages: scope and gap analysis, building the AI management system and controls, an internal audit and management review, then the Stage 1 and Stage 2 certification audits.
As with any ISO standard, you cannot compress it below the point where you have generated real records. An internal audit and a management review must actually have happened before Stage 2. Our ISO 42001 requirements guide sets out what each stage involves.
Are there grants to help with the cost?
Sometimes. A number of state and federal business-growth and technology-adoption grants can offset certification costs for eligible Australian businesses, and AI governance is an area governments are increasingly keen to support. Named programs change constantly, so the reliable approach is to check the current live programs on the government’s own grants finder rather than chase a specific grant name from an old article. Our guide to government grants and funding for ISO certification walks through how to find what you’re eligible for right now; the same method applies to ISO 42001.
How to reduce the cost of ISO 42001
- Build on an existing ISO 27001 system. The shared management-system backbone is the single biggest saving.
- Define a tight scope: govern the AI systems that matter, don’t try to boil the ocean.
- Build the system yourself with ISO mentoring rather than full consultancy.
- Certify ISO 42001 and ISO 27001 together if you need both. One coordinated effort is cheaper than two separate projects.
- Start with an independent gap analysis so you know the size of the job before you commit.
A lower-cost path: ISO 42001 with mentoring
Because AI governance expertise is still scarce, full consultancy for ISO 42001 can be expensive, and it can leave you reliant on outside help. ISO mentoring is usually the more cost-effective route: we coach your own people through scoping, AI risk and impact assessment, controls, internal audit and management review. You do the work with an experienced ISO auditor beside you, the cost comes down, and the capability stays in your business. If you’re certifying ISO 42001 and ISO 27001 together, mentoring lets you build both in one coordinated effort, and the ISO 27001 cost is easier to justify when it also underpins your AI governance.

Frequently asked questions
How much does ISO 42001 cost in Australia?
For most Australian SMEs, Streamline fees run from around $9,000, where AI is confined to internal productivity tools and you already hold ISO 27001, up to $55,000 and beyond where you are developing or self-hosting models. The certification body audit is charged separately. How deeply AI sits in your business moves the figure more than headcount does.
Is ISO 42001 cheaper if we already have ISO 27001?
Yes, significantly. ISO 42001 shares its management system structure with ISO 27001, so an existing ISMS gives you most of the framework. You add AI-specific governance rather than building from the ground up, which can roughly halve the cost.
How much does ISO 42001 cost per year?
After the first-year setup, ongoing cost is mainly the annual surveillance audit, plus your own internal audit and management review time, and a fuller recertification audit every third year. Because AI systems change quickly, budget some ongoing time to keep impact assessments and controls current.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take?
Three to six months for most organisations, depending on your starting point and the number and risk level of the AI systems in scope. An existing ISO 27001 system puts you at the short end. Starting from scratch with high-risk AI runs longer.
Do we need ISO 42001 if we already have ISO 27001?
Not necessarily. They cover different things. ISO 27001 governs information security; ISO 42001 governs how you manage AI responsibly. If AI is becoming central to your product or operations, or customers and regulators are starting to ask how you govern it, ISO 42001 is the recognised answer, and it slots neatly onto an ISO 27001 base.
Is this the cost of the ISO 42001 exam or lead auditor course?
No. This guide covers certifying an organisation’s AI management system: our fees, the certification body’s audit fees and your own team’s time. A personal ISO 42001 lead auditor or lead implementer course, and its exam, is a separate cost charged by the training provider, and it does not certify your organisation.
Are grants available to offset the cost?
Sometimes. Various state and federal business and technology-adoption grants can help eligible businesses. Named programs change often, so check the current live programs; our guide to ISO certification grants shows how.
