ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. It’s what gives your laboratory’s results credibility and recognition. One important distinction up front: in Australia, laboratories are accredited to ISO 17025 by NATA. They aren’t “certified”. Here’s what that means and what’s involved.

What is ISO 17025?
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 sets out the general requirements for the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of laboratories. It covers both the management of the lab and its technical capability. The idea is that anyone relying on the lab’s results can trust they are valid and reproducible.
Accreditation vs certification
This trips a lot of people up. Management-system standards like ISO 9001 or ISO 27001 are certified. ISO 17025 is accredited: an assessment of a laboratory’s technical competence to perform specific tests or calibrations. In Australia that accreditation is granted by NATA (the National Association of Testing Authorities), and it is NATA’s international recognition that makes its accredited results accepted overseas. That recognition ran through the ILAC mutual recognition arrangement until 1 January 2026, when ILAC and the IAF were replaced by Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated and the two arrangements were consolidated into a single Global ACI MRA. Existing accreditations continue to be recognised through the transition, so nothing changes for a NATA-accredited laboratory.
What ISO 17025 requires
- Competent personnel: demonstrated skills, training and authorisation for each method.
- Validated methods: test and calibration methods that are fit for purpose and properly validated.
- Equipment and traceability: calibrated equipment with measurement traceability to national or international standards.
- Measurement uncertainty: estimated and reported where relevant.
- Quality control: ongoing checks, proficiency testing and a management system underpinning it all.
The NATA accreditation process
In broad terms: prepare your management system and technical procedures, apply to NATA, undergo a document review and an on-site assessment by NATA’s technical assessors, address any findings, and accreditation is then granted for your defined scope of tests or calibrations. Accreditation is maintained through periodic surveillance assessments.
How Streamline helps
We help testing and calibration laboratories build a practical ISO 17025 management system and prepare for NATA assessment (documentation, procedures, internal audits and management review) so you go into assessment confident. We can build it with you or mentor your team and provide the independent internal audit.
Frequently asked questions
Is ISO 17025 a certification or an accreditation?
An accreditation. Laboratories are accredited to ISO 17025 (in Australia, by NATA) for a specific scope of tests or calibrations. It’s an assessment of technical competence, not a management-system certification.
Who accredits ISO 17025 in Australia?
NATA, the National Association of Testing Authorities, is Australia’s recognised accreditation body for laboratories. Its accreditations are accepted internationally through the mutual recognition arrangement now administered by Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, which replaced ILAC and the IAF on 1 January 2026.
