ISO 9001:2026 update, 22 September 2026. ISO published the new edition on 16 September 2026, and AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 was published on 18 September 2026 as an identical adoption, superseding AS/NZS ISO 9001:2016. If you are certifying now, ask your certification body which edition it can currently issue against, because accreditation to a new edition follows publication rather than arriving with it. What ISO 9001 certification involves

Two things. A quality management system that genuinely meets ISO 9001, and an audit by an accredited certification body. In Australia that means a body accredited by JAS-ANZ, because that is what a customer or a tender panel checks when they look your certificate up. Unaccredited certificates cost less, and we have seen them knocked back by the very customer they were bought to satisfy.

Tenders sometimes ask for quality management accreditation or ISO 9001 accreditation instead. In practice they mean the same outcome: your business becomes certified, and it is the certification body that holds the accreditation.

The process, step by step

1. Gap analysis. An honest assessment of where your current practices stand against the standard. See our gap analysis audits.
2. Context, scope and risk. What the certificate covers, who your interested parties are, and the risks and opportunities across your core processes.
3. Development. System documentation built around your existing processes, not a generic template. A lean manual, the procedures your team actually uses, and the registers behind them.
4. Implementation. Your team uses the system in day-to-day work and builds the evidence trail.
5. Internal audit and management review. The independent internal audit every certified system needs under clause 9.2.
6. Certification audit. Stage 1 and Stage 2 by your chosen certification body, maintained afterwards through annual surveillance audits.

If we had to name the single most common reason a Stage 2 audit goes sideways, it is an internal audit and management review done the week before as a tick-box, rather than genuinely used to find and fix problems first. Auditors can tell the difference in about five minutes. Do that step properly and the certification audit becomes a formality.

How long does it take?

Three to six months for most small and medium organisations. A tightly scoped system runs at the short end: roughly a month to develop it, a month to implement it, and a month for the internal audit and management review before the external audit.

Anything shorter than that is usually rushed, because the system has to run for a while before there is enough evidence to audit. Anything much longer and the project loses momentum, which derails more certifications than any technical problem. If you are up against a tight tender deadline, faster certification is sometimes possible, with trade-offs worth understanding first.

Two separate bills. Consultant support to design and implement the system, and the certification body’s own fee for the two stage audit, which they set according to your size, scope and number of sites.

Why businesses certify, and what they get

Almost everyone starts because a customer or a tender asked. What keeps the system alive afterwards is usually something else.

• Tenders and supply contracts. Certification is frequently a condition of bidding, and its absence removes you quietly rather than loudly.
• Fewer defects and less rework. The cost of poor quality is real money that rarely appears in a ledger anyone reviews.
• Consistency when people are away. Clear processes and responsibilities mean the business runs the same on a bad week.
• Risk-based thinking and leadership accountability. The standard puts quality objectives and the review of them with top management, not with a quality officer.

If you supply a regulated sector, ISO 9001 is often the base for a sector-specific standard rather than the end point. Aerospace, automotive and medical devices each have one. The newest to matter here is ISO 19443, the nuclear supply chain version, which is being asked about as AUKUS builds a submarine supply chain in Australia. It sits on top of ISO 9001 rather than replacing it, so a working quality system is the foundation either way.
