Bottom line: Before choosing the company that will audit your business and issue the ISO certificate, check that it is officially approved to certify the particular standard you need. Then ask who will conduct the audit and whether they understand your industry. Compare prices only after those checks. A cheap certificate is poor value if your customers, regulators or tender panels will not accept it.
This guide explains how to compare ISO certification bodies in Australia, verify their credentials and prepare for the external audit. Streamline helps organisations build and maintain management systems. We do not issue certificates, so the certification decision remains independent.

Certification body, consultant and accreditation body
These roles are different, and keeping them separate protects the credibility of your certificate.
- An ISO consultant is the driving instructor. Depending on what you need, they can build or improve the system, mentor your team, provide training, complete gap assessments or internal audits, and help you prepare for certification. They help you become road-ready, but they do not issue the licence.
- A certification body is the driving assessor. It independently audits the management system and decides whether your organisation has met the requirements for certification.
- An accreditation body, such as JAS-ANZ, plays the role of the transport authority. It approves and oversees the certification bodies that conduct the assessments. Using an unaccredited certification body is a little like paying for a driving test with an assessor who has not been approved by the Department of Transport. You may receive a piece of paper, but others may have good reason not to trust it.
Many people search for ISO accreditation when they mean ISO certification. Our guide to certification versus accreditation explains the distinction in more detail.
How to choose an ISO certification body
Start with the following checks. They will tell you far more than a logo or a headline price.
1. Verify accreditation and scope
We recommend choosing a certification body that is accredited for every standard you need audited. Search the JAS-ANZ Register of Accredited Bodies and confirm that the organisation is active and that its scope covers each required standard. This should include standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 27001 and other certifiable management system standards. Limited exceptions exist. HACCP certification, for example, may be offered under a scheme that is not covered by JAS-ANZ accreditation. If accreditation is available for the standard you need, we recommend treating it as a requirement rather than an optional extra.
If your certificate will be used outside Australia and New Zealand, another accreditation body may be acceptable when it is a signatory to the relevant international mutual recognition arrangement, now administered by Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated. Check the requirement in your contract, tender or customer specification before booking.
Do not rely on the logo alone
Before submitting a certificate to a customer or tender panel, check that the certificate, certification body and accreditation are legitimate. Our guide explains how to verify the certification body, accreditation mark, standard, scope and certificate status.
How to Check if an ISO Certificate Is Real or Fake →2. Confirm industry competence
Ask how the certification body will select an auditor for your technical sector. An experienced auditor should understand the risks, terminology, legislation and operating conditions that apply to your work. This matters in construction, health, food, laboratories, information security and other specialist sectors.
3. Compare the full three-year cost
Do not compare the Stage 1 quote alone. Ask for the total expected cost of Stage 1, Stage 2, annual surveillance audits, recertification, travel, certificate administration and additional time needed to close nonconformities. Our Australian guides explain the wider cost picture for ISO 9001 certification, ISO 27001 certification and ISO 42001 certification.
4. Check auditor availability
A suitable auditor may not be available when your tender closes. Ask for realistic Stage 1 and Stage 2 dates before signing. If timing matters, obtain written confirmation of the proposed audit window and understand what could move it.
5. Understand how the audit will be delivered
Confirm which activities will be completed remotely and which sites must be visited. Multi-site organisations should ask how sampling will work, how travel will be charged and whether specialist activities require additional audit time.
6. Review communication and continuity
Find out who manages your account, whether the same auditor is likely to return for surveillance, how quickly reports are issued and how certification decisions are communicated. Good administration becomes important when you need evidence for a tender or must coordinate audits across several sites.
7. Check transfer and complaints processes
You are not necessarily locked into the same body for the full certification cycle. Ask how a transfer would be handled and read the complaints and appeals process before engagement. Those documents provide a useful view of how the organisation manages difficult decisions.
Selected ISO certification bodies in Australia
The organisations below are a practical starting point, not a ranking and not an exhaustive list. They are included because they provide certification services relevant to Streamline clients. Accreditation and scope can change, so verify the current register entry before relying on this page. Each entry shows the date its accredited scope was last checked.
How to check a certification body’s accredited scope
- Open the certification body’s JAS-ANZ record.
- Select the Scope tab.
- Leave Schemes selected.
- Select the arrow beside the relevant scheme to see the standards and scope details.
- Confirm the required standard, version and any sector or country limitations before accepting a quote.
The Contact Details tab alone does not confirm that the body is accredited for the standard you need.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote
- Is the quoted certification covered by your current accredited scope?
- Which technical sector will be used, and what experience will the auditor have in our industry?
- How many audit days are included at Stage 1, Stage 2 and surveillance?
- Which sites will be visited, and what can be completed remotely?
- Are travel, certificate and administration charges included?
- What dates are available for Stage 1 and Stage 2?
- How long does the certification decision usually take after findings are closed?
- What is the process and cost if we later transfer certification?
Certification process and timing
Most organisations should allow three to six months to build, implement and certify a management system. Larger, multi-site and multinational organisations usually take longer.
- Build or upgrade the management system. Define the scope, processes, risks, controls and evidence required by the standard.
- Implement it. Your team needs enough operating evidence to show that the system works in practice.
- Complete the internal audit and management review. A certification readiness review can identify gaps before the external auditor arrives.
- Book Stage 1 and Stage 2. Share the project plan with the certification body early so it can reserve suitable dates and auditor competence.
- Address findings and receive the certification decision. Certification follows the independent review of the audit evidence and closure of any required corrective action.
Our guide to the ISO certification audit process explains what happens during Stage 1, Stage 2 and surveillance. If you already hold a certificate, you can also use our guide to check whether an ISO certificate is legitimate.
Certification body questions
Must an Australian organisation use a JAS-ANZ body?
JAS-ANZ accreditation is the clearest starting point for an Australian organisation. Another accreditation body recognised through the relevant international arrangement may be acceptable, but your contract, tender or customer requirement decides what evidence will be accepted.
What if no JAS-ANZ body is accredited for my standard?
It happens, and it is worth knowing before you promise a customer an accredited certificate. Not every standard has a JAS-ANZ scheme behind it. ISO 19443, the nuclear supply chain standard now being asked about because of AUKUS, is the current example: the accreditation bodies recognised for it are ACCREDIA, COFRAC, DAkkS, INAB, KAB, NAH and UKAS, and JAS-ANZ is not among them. Certification is still available here through the Australian offices of global bodies, but the accreditation behind the certificate will be foreign. Ask which body signs it, then check that body’s register rather than the logo.
Can an ISO consultant issue the certificate?
No. A consultant can help build, implement and test the management system, but the certification audit and decision must remain independent. Streamline works with your chosen certification body while keeping those responsibilities separate.
Can the certification body build the management system?
An accredited certification body must manage impartiality and cannot build the system that it later certifies. It may explain its audit process, provide general information and, within defined limits, offer pre-assessment services. It should not make management decisions or design your controls for you.
Is the cheapest certification quote the best choice?
Not necessarily. Compare audit time, accreditation scope, auditor competence, availability, travel and the complete three-year programme. A quote that omits surveillance or relies on an unsuitable scope can cost more later.
Prepare for certification with confidence
Streamline’s ISO consultants can build or upgrade your management system, complete the internal audit, close the remaining gaps and coordinate the project plan with your chosen certification body. Talk to us about your certification target and timing.
Information on certification bodies and accreditation scopes can change. Verify current accreditation, scope and contractual requirements directly with JAS-ANZ and the certification body before engagement.
